Transitional justice is about justice for war crimes – British MEP

The Sri Lankan government must ensure that transitional justice also includes justice for war crimes, stated Syed Kamall Conservative MEP for London.

Responding to questions from the British Tamils Forum, Mr Kamall said that EU member states noted more had to be done to ensure accountability on the island.

Transitional justice is indeed about rehabilitation and reconstruction, but also about achieving justice for war crimes,” said Mr Kamall. “The EU Member States have in their most recent Council conclusions on Sri Lanka welcomed progress made, but also noticed the need for more to be done.”

Noting that Sri Lanka does “enjoy a trading relationship with the EU”, Mr Kamall went on to note that, “however, as you well know the EU Member States issued trade sanctions against Sri Lanka in 2010 when the country's trade preferences under GSP+ were temporarily withdrawn”.

“These trade preferences have still not been restored,” he said, reiterating the need for accountability.

“The EU hopes to be able to do this soon, but not before a number of conditions have been fulfilled, in particular related to human rights, including accountability for the end-phase of the civil war.

Sri Lanka's Jaffna commander says military will stay in Tamil areas

Sri Lanka's military commander in Jaffna, Mahes Senanayake on Sunday reaffirmed the military presence in Tamil areas.

"We are here to look after you, we will attend to all your needs," Commander Senanayake was quoted by the Daily Mirror as saying.

Stating there would never be another separatist war in the North, he was further reported as saying:
"Army had been having a very close rapport with the people at all religious functions and in disaster in the North. The war which dragged on for a number of years had apparently distanced the Army from interacting with the people, but now it is time for the people to realise who the Army and other security sections really are. They can now present their problems to the nearest Army camp and obtain redress and also submit to them any appeals for assistance."
His remarks came despite repeated calls from the Tamil people for the military to leave the North-East.

Maithripala Sirisena could be "Sri Lanka's Mandela"... Really?

Taylor Dibbert critiques the proposition made in a recently published article by researchers at the University of Maryland that "Maithripala Sirisena, Sri Lanka's current president, is poised to follow in Nelson Mandela's footsteps and help heal a divided nation." Mr. Dibbert notes that Sri Lanka's case is significantly different from that of South Africa and that progress in Sri Lanka since Sirisena took power has been inadequate and slow. Unlike Mandela, Sirisena lacks the broad support of various communities and, in particular, the Tamil community, which has become disillusioned following his failure to act on core Tamil issues.

Sri Lankan Minister says country rescued from pressure by international community

The present government rescued the country from pressure by the international community, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Harsha De Silva while speaking about a recent tax increase. "If the country is not protected from the adverse pressure by the international community, the people would have been subjected to economic sanctions and even starvation without food and medicine. The present government was able to rescue the country on the nick of time and restore the status quo with the international community through negotiations," Mr. De Silva said.

British citizen tortured and arbitrarily detained in Sri Lanka

Mr. Velauthapilai Renugaruban was arbitrarily detained and tortured by Sri Lankan police in relation to their suspicion of his participation in LTTE-related activities in the UK. Two men without identification or warrants took him from his home in Sri Lanka on June 2nd in a van. A day later, two men without identification alleging to be representatives of the British High Commission visited Mr. Renugaruban's mother at her home in Jaffna advising the family to confess they were LTTE members to help them negotiate his release.

Mr. Renugaruban's family went to the British government and human rights activists who inquired into the case. Following these inquiries, the president's advisor and Governor of the Eastern Province, Mr. Austin Fernando managed to locate the detained British citizen and confirm that he was in Sri Lankan police custody. Only after these inquiries from international officials was Mr. Renugaruban produced in front of the Jaffna Magistrate's Court and is now officially detained until June 17th. He suffered from several torture inflicted injuries discovered when he was briefly admitted to the Jaffna hospital on June 7th from prison.
